Executive Producer Todd Graves on Moe's final words of wisdom that influences how he teaches golf, plays the game & lives life
Moe Norman walks with Todd Graves
As I walked through the rotating doors of the restaurant, I noticed Moe seated in a large red arm-chair next to the hostess stand. He was looking down reading a handful of folded papers. It would be the last time I would share a meal with Moe, and it would be one of the most memorable.
I was curious about the papers.
“What are you reading, Moe?”
“I met a ghost,” he said.
“You met a ghost. What do you mean?”
Moe peeled away one of the papers and handed it to me. Scribbled on the middle of the page were five hand-written words:
Play Golf From Your Heart
“I met a ghost and he gave me this. He told me that you have to play golf from the heart.”
That night we talked for hours about what these words meant. It was unforgettable, and it would be Moe’s last lesson to me.
Moe had waited ten years to teach me this final lesson. Maybe because he finally thought I was ready, or maybe because he knew it would be the last time I would see him.
He taught me that your mental game starts in your heart, not in your head.
During the 5-Day Single Plane Premier Golf Schools, on the last day, I teach students what Moe shared with me—the art of the using the heart, not the mind, to play better golf. He taught me that the mental game is not actually mental at all. It’s not about using your mind but actually emptying it. It’s about accessing your feelings through your heart.
While it seems normal to navigate the world and golf through analysis, Moe felt his way through both. If he was challenged or upset, it was because something didn’t feel good to him. Moe didn’t measure things, he felt them.
Of course Moe had an incredible ball-striking skill, but I wonder, was his real talent actually a gift for a feeling? He seemed “tuned in” to a sixth sense of intuition and awareness more than anyone I have ever known.
Using Moe’s lessons to stop analyzing and start feeling, I developed FOUR learnable and natural processes. These four processes help you escape from over-analysis and compulsive thinking so you can take your best game to the golf course. These rituals prepare you to play, help you execute great golf shots and keep you fully present and in each moment. In essence, you learn to take your best self, free from the mind, to the golf course.
I teach these processes in my ‘Playing Golf from Your Heart’ presentation in our 5-Day camps. The presentation is so powerful, it is not unusual for students to give me a resounding ovation.
Last year in Oklahoma City, a few of the students approached me after the class. They thanked me for teaching them Moe’s “Play Golf from the Heart” wisdom and urged me to produce a video of the presentation, so they could have a copy. I recently completed this project.
